Formentera – the smallest of the Balearic Islands
Fairly, this just 90 sq. km island is also called the "Caribbean island in the Mediterranean Sea”, and it does really make
justice to the name – fine sandy beaches and clear, still clean sea with the prettiest turquoise-blue colour.
Formentera´s scenery offers the perfect conditions for long bicycle tours and relaxing trekking. Also the water sport’s friends may find in the area, 2 diving schools and 1 surfing school and catamaran school provide just for them.
The tourist centre of Formentera is Es Pujols, a pretty bay with nice extended sandy beaches. The visitor finds here also dozens of bars, coffee shops, restaurants, supermarkets, souvenir stores and two clubs.
Located in middle of the island, approx. 2 kms of Es Pujols, lies a small place Sant Ferran which became famous during the 60’s. Here the "hippies" met from all over the world and the meeting place was the today legendary, Fonda Pepe. In the meantime, Sant Ferran with its bars and restaurants is also an attractive place for night lovers.
The principal place of the island is Sant Francesc, the capital of the island with a military church from the 18 century.
During the day Sant Francesc is a nice and lively place that offers shops for all tastes, as from boutiques, perfume stores,
stands with art craft up to souvenir stores, coffee shops and restaurants.
La Mola with approx. 190 mts is the highest point of the island. Delight yourself with magnificent view of the island from the sightseeing Mirador or from the footpath «Es Camí de Sa Pujada». In El Pilar on Wednesday and Sundays afternoon you’ll find the famous Hippie Market.
Most of the existing holidays accommodation are family pensions and small apartment as well as
summer cottages. There are only four big hotel resorts, 2 of which have 4 stars.
