Kos

Kos is the second biggest island of Dodecanese group of Islands, with Rhodes the biggest one. It has an area of 282 sq. Km and all together 25.000 inhabitants. Kos is located in the South-East part of Aegean Sea, near by Turkey. Due to the geographical position, Kos has very stabile weather conditions especially during summer season (from April till middle of November).
Kos is famous worldwide because of Hippocrates, the father of Medicine, who was living on the island. Asklepeion the first hospital, is located 5 Km. from Kos center. Thousands of people visit this place every year. In the town you can also visit the Ancients Agora, Gymnasium and Odeon. At the harbor the people can visit the old Castle from the 1391-1396 AC and also the famous Palm Trees Avenue. The Plane of Hippocrates is just 2 minutes walk from the Castle. In the Archeological Museum in the town, you can see a lot of archeological treasures found during the excavations and also the statue of Hippocrates.
The old town of Kos is also well known. A lot of cafes, taverns and tourist shops are there. East from Kos town in a distance of 10 Km is the famous Hot Springs. More or less everyone visiting Kos is also visiting at least once the hot springs. Just 12 Km from Kos town in the mountain of Dikaios is Zia, a small village with panoramic view over Tigaki and Marmari. There you have a lot of shopping possibilities and also very nice taverns.
Driving southwest near by the Airport in the village of Antimahia is the windmill. In the East of the island is Kardamena, before a small fishing village, but now the second tourist center of the Island. At the very south of Kos is the village of Kefalos, the old capital of Kos, build on a hill with a fantastic view over the bay of Kamari.
Kos is divided in 6 tourist areas. In the east part of Kos town is Psalidi, where you find nice beaches but not sandy ones. West of Kos in Tigaki, Marmari and Mastihari the beaches are sandy. In Kardamena, in the east part of the island and in Kefalos (Kamari beach) in the south, the beaches are also sandy. Very famous is also the Paradise beach near by Kefalos. Tourists visiting Kos have a lot of choices to spend their vacations. Except of relaxing at the hotel-pools or at the nice beaches, they can also be quite active.
Almost every big hotel offers a lot of sport activities and water sports. More than 5 hotels have SPA and wellness centers.
Kos is also well known as the paradise of bicycles. As the island is almost flat, you can drive with a bike everywhere and if not, then you can rent a mofa or a motorbike. For them who like nature, the mountain of Dikaios is an alternative to walk.
The beaches in Tigaki, Marmari, Mastihari, Kardamena and Kefalos, are very famous for the water sports activities. Because of its location, Kos is the center of Dodecanese islands. From Kos with organized excursions and also privately, you can visit other island and Turkey. There are daily excursions to Kalymnos (the island of sponges), to Nissyros (the Volcano Island), to Rhodos and to Patmos (the holy island). You can reach Turkey (Bodrum) in only 45 Minutes from Kos. The new Marina of Kos is one of the best in Greece and already well known. There is daily connection by ferryboat with Rhodos in the south, the other islands in the north and also Athens. In the summer we have 6 times per day flight connection with Athens.
Not to forget, the last years Kos became one of the best destinations in Greece for Conventions and Incentives. We have a very big Congress Center for more than 3.000 people and also in three more hotels, centers with capacity for 600-800 people. Because of history ( Hippocrates), a lot of medical and pharmaceutical congresses are taking place on the Island every year.
The big must for every young tourist, but even the older ones, is the nightlife in Kos town. The bar street is a place everyone knows. Also in Kardamena you have a lot of possibilities for nightlife. For people asking for less action in the evenings, there are small bars and taverns everywhere in every touristic area of the Island
